Tar is a unix (linux, freeBSD, Sun Solaris etc.) command line program and file extension. It stands for Tape ARchive. If you have had the pleasure to work with tapes such as reel-to-reel or cartridges you know how frustrading it is to find and retrieve a file. Tar made life a little easier - sometimes.
